Despite the huge and increasing application of high solids content polymer colloids for coating application, there are few challenges that still limit their full potential. The most emerging one is use surfactants colloidal stabilization affects negatively performance. Moreover, due to particulate nature, waterborne dispersions presents lower mechanical performance with respect solvent-based counterparts. In this work, possibility zwitterionic monomers contain multiple ionic functional groups, provide stability industrially relevant (50 %) was investigated. For aim, small amount 2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS) monomer employed form in-situ stabilizing units during methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate (MMA/BA) emulsion polymerization. main challenge avoid DMAPS aqueous phase polymerization, hence, achieve its incorporation onto hydrophobic MMA/BA particles, a key requirement stabilization. Certainly, incorporations were achieved (>50 providing excellent stability, stiff nature group, impressive improvement properties resulting films. Additionally, presence in chains conveys coatings enhanced water resistance humidity permeation, paving way towards powerful barrier application.
